Coke Challenge, Should We Really?

Now as a concerned citizen of the world I feel that it is important to speak about certain things. I am all for awareness about cancer and disease. We need to be focused on things like this instead of worrying about what’s happening to our favorite celebrity. Raising awareness is a good thing, but how you raise that awareness is just as important. This comes in response to the new way people are raising awareness for breast cancer, by holding a can or bottle of pop between their breasts. Now I can see how this may seem as a fun and creative thing to do, but it draws attention to the issue in a negative way. Yes you may show solidarity and understanding by doing it, but at the same time your leaving yourself out there to be viewed by all in a vulnerable way. Many may look at it and think, “Oh they are showing they support breast cancer survivors and research” but just as many will look at it and think, “that girl has no top on has something between her boobs. Nice.” You show support, but leave yourself exposed to those who will use the image negatively.Think before you act on this. Do you want to be made vulnerable to the beast that the internet can be?

I won’t be sexist, I’ll call out the guys as well. I can’t lie, when I first saw a pair of gentlemen doing the challenge I had a nice laugh about it . That doesn’t mean that its alright for guys to do it. Show solidarity by doing the same thing, but choose something that doesn’t put your dignity at risk. Instead of cans, how about a sign, with your shirt on, saying “These are gifts. Help keep them.” That to me sends a more profound message and shows clearly that person has every respect for the human body and wants to get rid of breast cancer. Am I just being a little overzealous? Maybe. However, we can all raise awareness to this matter while still keeping our honor intact. This may not stop people from doing the challenge, but hopefully it will make you think twice before trying. Raise awareness the right way.
